The Department of Biological Sciences, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI), organized a one-day hands-on training workshop titled “Biosafety and Biosecurity in the Era of Emerging Infectious Diseases.”
The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ understanding of biosafety and biosecurity principles in the context of advanced biotechnological research.
Prof. Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed, Dean Faculty of Sciences, emphasized the importance of adhering to national and international biosafety guidelines, such as the Cartagena Protocol under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
Sessions included presentations by Dr. Tahir Usman (Abdul Wali Khan University, Mardan) on biosafety protocols and risk management for emerging pathogens, and Dr. Saira Karimi (Bahria University, Islamabad) on biosecurity strategies and technological solutions for biological threats. Hands-on training sessions provided participants with practical demonstrations and simulations, focusing on personal safety measures and risk mitigation in laboratory settings.
Dr. Shaheen Shahzad, the event convener, highlighted the significance of equipping students and researchers with skills to address public health challenges. Certificates of completion were awarded to participants, marking their active involvement in this initiative.
The event brought together students, researchers, and professionals from diverse institutions, fostering collaboration and skill enhancement. This initiative underscores IIUI’s commitment to addressing global biosafety challenges and advancing academic excellence in biological sciences.
