A seminar titled “Striving Together for Thalassemia Free Pakistan” was arranged by Department of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology to mark the World Thalassemia day at Allama Iqbal Auditorium, Faisal Masjid Campus of International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI).
The event was held in collaboration with Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, Punjab Thalassemia Prevention Program, Thalassemia Center, Bait-ul-Mal Pakistan and Multi LinkX Enterprises Rawalpindi.
Prof Dr. Arshad Zia, Dean, Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences, IIUI welcomed distinguished guests. Lt. Col(R) ShafiUllah and Dr. Nadeem Ikram from Punjab Thalassemia Prevention Program, Dr Khalid Mahmood from Thalassemia Centre of Bait ul Mal were resource persons who gave thought provoking lectures to the audience.
They delivered lectures on Thalassemia awareness, prevention and screening. Tireless effort of Pakistan Bait-ul-mal and Punjab Thalassemia Prevention Program was appreciated by the participants, while Students were encouraged for Thalassemia screening and volunteer for blood donation.
Speakers also highlighted the awareness related to Thalassemia tests before marriage. Two patients of the Thalassemia also showed up and narrated their miserable journey of life because of this disease.
Dr. Asma Gul, Chairperson, Department of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology, International Islamic University Islamabad, expressed gratitude to the guests and appreciated the efforts of all the faculty members especially Dr. Fareeha (Chief Organizer), Dr. Shaheen, Ms. Mehrosh and student organizers.
The Souvenirs were presented to the Resource Persons at the end of event. Screening for Thalassemia test was also performed after the session by Punjab Thalassemia Prevention Program. Lastly, Meanwhile, a Thalassemia awareness walk was organized in which students, faculty members and guests participated enthusiastically.
