IIUI to hold 4th IABRC 2011 Conference
The Faculty of Management Sciences (FMS) of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) is organizing 4th two day “International Applied Business Research conference (IABRC) 2011” on November 28 & November 29, 2011. This conference is a pivotal activity to stimulate research culture by providing new academic researchers from the university and outside. The meeting of the Management Committee of the conference was held at the University here on Monday with Dr. Sahibzada Sajid ur Rehman, Acting President IIUI in the chair.

FUNERAL PRAYER IN ABSENTIA FOR SAUDI CROWN PRINCE AT FAISAL MASJID
The funeral prayer in absentia for late Saudi crown Prince Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz was held at Faisal Masjid Islamabad after the Jumma prayer. Faisal Masjid Khateeb Maulana Tahir Siddique led prayer. Representatives of Saudi Embassy in Pakistan also attended the Ghaibana Nimaz e Janaza for late Saudi Crown Prince. Rich tributes were paid for the services of the late Prince for Islam and Muslims of the world especially for Pakistanis.

IIUI SENDS RELIEF TO SINDH FLOOD AFFECTEES
The International Islamic University, Islamabad has sent a special team to help the flood affectees of Jamshoro, Sindh. The team consists of Mr. Khurshid Alam, , Director Finance, Mr. Manzoor Shah Deputy Director Sports, and Mr. Muhammad Jamil, Deputy Director Administration. It is to remember that IIU has started help the affectees of all natural disasters since the earthquake of October 2005. For present assistance of flood affectees, the university team has so far collected about half million rupees from Faisal Mosque camps in current month.
Egyptian Ambassador visits IIUI
Newly appointed Egyptian Ambassador to Pakistan Said Mohamed El-Said Hindam visited the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) here on Thursday. He was received by Dr. Sahibzada Sajid Ur Rehman, Vice President, IIUI (now Acting President). Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik and Sahibzada Sajid Ur Rehman briefed him on academic as well as cultural role of the Islamic university.

Said Mohamed El-Said Hindam praised the role of the Islamic University in imparting quality education not only in this region but all over the world. He showed keen interest in the activities of the university and assured that his country would depute more faculty members to Islamic University to teach Islamic Intellectual thoughts , Islamic Art and Architecture and other fields.

He further said that future academic plans should be jointly exchanged to work better for the quality education. He also invited the Rector and Vice President IIUI to visit Al-Azhar University, Egypt.

Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik appreciated the role of Egyptians in reformist movements and especially in the sub continent. He said that Egypt was always a torch bearer of the reformists in the Muslims world. He added that even present head of Al-Azhar Dr. Ahmad Tayyab had also taught at the IIUI years back. Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik presented university crest to the Egyptian ambassador.

IIU holds a seminar on “Application of Ionizing Radiations in Everyday Life and Its Hazards & Protectioin”
Department of Physics, Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences (FBAS) of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) organized a seminar on “Application of Ionizing Radiations in everyday Life, Its Hazards & Protection” here on Tuesday in collaboration with Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA). Asad Ejaz Goraya, Senior Scientific Officer, PNRA was the spokesman / guest speaker of the seminar. Dr. Muhammad Irfan Khan, Dean FBAS, IIUI presided over the seminar while Dr. Ghulam Yasin Chuhan, Dean Faculty of Engineering and Technology, IIUI, Dr. Waqar Adil Sayyed, Chairperson Department of Physics, IIUI, Faculty members and a large number of students attended the seminar.

Mr. Asad Ejaz Goraya gave a brief presentation on the Hazards and Safety measures from the Radiation. He said that we should initially promote an awareness campaign how to protect our environment. He added that the purpose of the seminar was to give awareness about the safe operations of the radiation based facilities and to protect the students, teachers as well as the environment from the hazardous radiation effects.

Dr. Waqar Adil Syed gave a brief introduction of the department and its academic programs and said that the department has acquired some radiation based equipment and installed recently.

At the end Dr. Muhammad Irfan Khan, gave his concluding remarks about the activity and emphasized on the importance of the awareness regarding the safety measures and the hazards of the Ionizing Radiations.

IIUI remembers bomb blasts victims
To continue its march towards Islamic humanism and Islamic liberalism, Prof. Malik
The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) remembered 2009 Bomb Blast Victims at its Female Campus. Fateha was offered for the victims of bomb blasts who killed 6 female, 2 male students and a security guard on 20th October 2009.

Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik, Rector (IIUI), Dr. Sahibzada Sajid-ur-Rehman, Vice President (IIUI), Prof. Qaiserah M. Alvi, Director (Female Campus), Dr. Sadia Tahir, Student Advisor/Provost along with faculty members, officers, staff members and students were present at the event to remember the departed souls.

Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik said that it was a terrifying disaster, which will have ever lasting marks on our memories. This was the first time that militants targeted female students and a prestigious Islamic educational institution. He announced that the IIUI shall continue its march towards the Islamic humanism and Islamic liberalism which were main targets of that bomb blasts. He admired the students for showing courage and unity by enduring their contribution to their studies. He also thanked the Government of Pakistan for paying compensations to the victims of the bomb blasts.

Prof. Qaiserah M. Alvi paid tributes to the departed souls and appreciated courage of injured persons. At the end Dr. Sahibzada Sajid ur Rehman, Vice President (IIUI) led “Fateha” for the victims and prayed for the departed souls. Students lit candles and shower flowers to remember their colleagues.

Those who laid their lives due to bomb blasts, were: Aamna Tahir, Tayyaba Hina, Amna Batool, Hina Nawaz, Aqsa Malik, Sidra Khalid, Hafiz Nafees Anjum, Hafiz Khalil ur Rehman and Pervez Masih.

IIUI to Remember 20th October Bomb blasts victims
The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) is remembering victims of twin bomb blasts which took place on 20th October, 2009 at its New Campus. Six Female Students, Two Male Students and a Security guards lost their lives due to the tragic incident on that day while 34 persons were injured. Martyrs names are: Aamna Tahir, Tayyaba Hina, Amna Batool, Hina Nawaz, Aqsa Malik, Sidra Khalid, Hafiz Nafees Anjum, Hafiz Khalil ur Rehman and Pervez Masih. Special functions shall be held on this occasion at the university as well as in native areas of those who lost their lives. Main function in this regard shall be held at 11:00 a.m. at the female campus of the university.
DR. SAHIBZADA SAJID UR REHMAN JOINS AS VP IIUI
Prof. Dr. Sahibzada Sajid Ur Rehman has assumed responsibilities as Vice President (Administration, Finance & Planning) of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IUI). Earlier he was working as Director General, Dawah Academy of the university. He will continue to supervise Dawah Academy as well. Organizations of the university faculty members, officers, staff members and students have welcomed the appointment of Sahibzada Sajid ur Rehman as Vice President of the university. A delegation of the university staff welfare association (USWA) led by its president Ch. Muhammad Nazir called on Sahibzada Sajid ur Rehman, welcomed him and presented a flower bouquet to him.

Prof. Dr. Sahibzada Sajid Ur Rehman has been appointed as Vice President (Administration, Finance & Planning) of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IUI). Earlier he was working as Director General, Dawah Academy of the university. He will also continue to supervise Dawah Academy as well.
IIUI is fully functional, says spokesman
The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) has clarified that it is fully functional and its classes are held regularly. Dispelling misconception in a section of the press, Syed Muzammil Hussain, Deputy Director Public Relations of the university said that due to an incident involving a small group of students with a teacher and an official of the university, a token strike was observed at the campus on Thursday. The strike was called off by the teachers and officers after sometime and the classes were resumed as usual. The university administration has constituted a committee to probe the issue. Now the university is fully functional and all classes are going on without any disruption.
Saudi Delegation Visits IIUI
Saeed Ahmad Al-Zahrani and Yaseen Saleh Alyami from Al-Madrasa A-Al-Arabia, Al-Saudia, Islamabad called on Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad, President, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI).

Talking to the delegation, Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad said that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have numerous religious and cultural importance for each other. He added that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are the strong partners of Muslim brotherhood bond. The President IIUI expressed the hope that this relationship will be strengthen in future.

Speaking on the occasion Saeed Ahmad Al-Zahrani and Yaseen Saleh Alyami said that The International Islamic University, Islamabad was established to spread the message of Islam which it is doing best.

EU Representative Visits IIUI
Mr. Mario Vottero, Representative of the European Union in Pakistan (EU) visited the Faculty of Shariah & Law of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) and met IIU ERASMUS MUNDUS TEAM. Dr. Muhammad Zia ul Haq, Dean Faculty of Shariah & Law, IIUI and other faculty members were also present on the occasion.

Mario Vottero said that IIUI is providing quality education not only to the Pakistani students but other parts of the world. The European union shall continue its support to the university by providing scholarships and other facilities. Dr. Muhammad Zia ul Haq thanked EU Representative and presented University crest to the Mario Vottero. Dr. Tahir Mansoori, former dean of the faculty also attended the meeting.

IIUI Holds Prize Distribution Ceremony
Prize Distribution Ceremony for the female students of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) who secured top positions in various sports events was organized by the Female Campus of the University. Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik, Rector IIUI was the chief guest on the occasion while Professor Qaiserah M. Alvi, Director Female Campus, IIUI and Dr. Sadia Tahir, Student Advisor (Female) also attended the ceremony.

In “Wall Climbing Competition” organized by the Adventure Club Pakistan on 27th September 2011 IIUI Students secured 2nd and 3rd position and in “Bash & Crash Volleyball Championship” organized by Business Linker, they made it to the final round and made it straight to victory by winning first three sets.

Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik awarded certificates and prizes to the students and congratulated them on their success.

IIUI holds seminar on “World Mental Health Day”
The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) organized a seminar on “World Mental Health Day”. Dr. Farid A Minhas, Director WHO (World Health Organization) Collaborating Centre for Pakistan was the guest speaker while Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad, President IIUI and Dr. Nabi Bux Jumani, Dean Faculty of Social Sciences, IIUI, Dr. Muhammad Tahir Khalily, Associate Prof of Department of Psychology, IIUI and a large number of students were also present on the occasion.

Dr. Farid A Minhas said that the society members should change their attitudes towards the mental disordered patients. He said that there is lack of treatment of mental disorder patients in our country and there are few mental health centres which are not sufficient to cope with its growing demand. Dr. Minhas said that People with co-morbid depression are three times less likely to comply with recommended treatment plans. Mental disorders are closely related to other priority conditions including HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health and non-communicable diseases, said Dr. Fareed Minhas. He also highlighted the vicious circle of poverty & mental health and figured that poverty creates unemployment which leads to low income & low education which finally ends with mental disorders.

He added that depression of 1.5 to 2 times more prevalent among low income groups of a population. He further added that there is a real need for studying, mobilizing and reorganizing potential resources to deal with the problem.

Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad said that mental disorder cases are more common in the developed countries as compared to the less developed nations. Dr. Mumtaz added that unfortunately our society is behaving unfavourably with mental disordered patients and practicing unethical treatment to such patients. President IIU announced provision of free counselling services to the students and their family members regarding mental health disorders at the Department of Psychology. Dr. Muhammad Tahir Khalily presented his paper on the topic

Bushra Hassan gets commonwealth scholarship
Ms. Bushra Hassan has qualified for a prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship Tenable in UK, 2011, awarded by Commonwealth Commission United Kingdom. She is serving as Assistant Professor at department of Psychology of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI). During a short span of her professional career of almost four years she has been able to publish 2 books and 6 research articles in journals of world repute. She also obtained Gold Medal for her outstanding academic performance during her M. Phil from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad.
Seminar on “Leukemia Diagnosis and Treatment” at IIUI
Department of Environmental Sciences of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) organized a seminar on “Leukemia Diagnosis and Treatment” in the Central Library of the university. Dr. Sairah Alvi, Scientific and Principal Technical Director, Clinical Trial Coordinator, Inc., USA (Dr. Sairah Alvi, Principal Technical Director, 5889 Oberlin Dr. Suite 101 San Diego, CA 92121) was the guest speaker on the occasion. Prof. Qaiserah M. Alvi, Director Female Campus, IIUI, Dr. Muhammad Irfan Khan, Dean, faculty of Basic & Applied Sciences of the university, female faculty members, administrative officers and a large number of female students were present on the occasion.

Dr. Sairah Alvi said that it’s important to understand the diagnosis and treatment of Leukemia as it is the most terrible cancer of all the existing cancers. She described that Leukemia is a range of cancers that begin in the blood-forming cells of the bone marrow. She further discussed that the symptoms of Leukemia may be difficult to recognize. It usually begins abruptly and intensely, but in some cases symptoms may develop slowly. They may be present one day, and absent the next. The causes of the disease are not known, but researchers believe that it develops from a combination of genetic, biologic, and environmental factors. Leukemia is diagnosed based on various tests. Diagnosis is very sensitive and specific. Once a diagnosis of leukemia has been made, further tests are performed on the bone marrow cells. She further enlightened that there is no best treatment for Leukemia. There are various drugs combinations for the treatment. Drugs for shorter duration can sometimes reduce toxicities without affecting the drugs’ cancer-killing effects. Likewise, side effects and complications of any treatment are common, more severe with higher doses, and increase over the course of treatment.

While answering a question raised by Director, Female campus, IIUI, Dr. Sairah Alvi enlightened the audience symptoms of the disease in a more clear way as a lay-man can understand the mechanisms of the disease. She said that symptoms include Fatigue, Paleness — patients may have poor coloring from anemia caused by insufficient red blood cells, Recurrent minor infections, Fever without known cause, Bone pain, Abdominal swelling, Bruising — may result from only slight injury, Poor healing of minor cuts, Uncontrolled bleeding — bleeding events increase as the bone marrow fails to produce enough platelets to make a normal blood clot, a condition called thrombocytopenia., Small, red spots on the skin (petechiae) and Vision changes (rare). Prof. Dr. Muhammad Irfan Khan, Dean Faculty of Basic & Applied Sciences, IIUI presented the university souvenirs to Dr. Sairah Alvi.

International Islamic University, Islamabad Snatches the “Cash Prize in a Business Plan Competition at IBA”
The female students of Faculty of Management Sciences, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) participated in a “Business Plan Competition at IBA” and got cash prizes of Rs. 5,000/- each. Prof. Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed, President IIUI congratulated the students and their parents on this great achievement as parents are the real architecture of such talent. Moreover he said that it has been immense pleasure for the institution to distribute prizes among such talented students. Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik, Rector IIUI appreciated the students and motivated them to continue such activities. Director Female Campus Professor Qaiserah M. Alvi also admired the efforts of the students and congratulated their parents as well.
IIU WELCOMES NEW CHINESE FEMALE STUDENTS
International Islamic University, Islamabad arranged an “Orientation ceremony” for newly admitted Chinese students at the Female Campus. This program was linked with the 60th anniversary of Pak-China friendship. Director Female Campus, Professor Qaiserah M. Alvi was the chief guest on the occasion. Professor Dr. Saadia Tahir, provost female students, IIUI and a large number of Chinese female students both old and the new were present in the orientation Ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Qaiserah M. Alvi said that IIU always welcomed the foreign female students especially students form China because of the great friendship between Pakistan and China. She said that like other foreign students Chinese students are feeling very comfortable in the atmosphere of the university. She added that this Orientation ceremony has specific importance and linked with the 60th anniversary of Pak-China friendship. The old Chinese students also welcomed the new students and spoke in Chinese language
