IIUI awards Ph.D. on “Mining Frequent Patterns without Minimum Support Threshold”
International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) has awarded Ph.D. Degree to Mr. Abdus Salam after he successfully defended his thesis on “Mining Frequent Patterns without Minimum Support Threshold”. He is the first Ph.D. scholar graduated from the department of computer science, International Islamic University, Islamabad.

He undertook his research under the direction of Prof. Dr. M. Sikandar Hayat Khayal, Chairperson Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi. The other committee members were: Dr. Abdus Sattar, ex-Director General Pakistan Computer Bureau, Dr. Sajjad Mohsin, Dean Faculty of Information Sciences and Technology, COMSATS Islamabad, Dr. Mohammad Sher, Chairman Department of Computer Science, IIU, and Dr. Riaz, Dean Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences, IIU. The thesis was also evaluated by Dr. Ahmad Hassan, Director Information Technology, University of Lancaster and Dr. Irfan Awan, Prof. of Computer Science, School of Computing, Informatics and Media, University of Bradford, UK as foreign experts.

His research work also published as a regular paper in Knowledge and Information Systems Journal by Springer-verlag London’s 27 Volume. The title of his research paper is “Mining top-k frequent patterns without minimum support threshold”.

FMS confers High Achiever’s Award
Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad, President, IIUI believes that the women executive officers have great potential to play role in the development of the country. He is optimistic that young women will lead the private sector in near future. Addressing the participants of High Achiever’s Award Ceremony held at Faisal Mosque Campus of International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) on Wednesday, the President IIUI said that discrimination against women in Pakistan and other countries is a major obstacle in way of their empowerment. He, however, hoped that with the elevation of young women they will be able to help the young ones to overcome this situation. Dr. Mumtaz said that three percent women are at high positions in corporate sector in the USA but the situation in Pakistan is different. He, however, said that universities can play important role in this regard. The President also congratulated the female achievers of academic excellence, their parents and teachers for supporting them. He said that the role of teachers in the success of students can not be ignored.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Danishman, Dean Faculty of Management Sciences, IIUI said that IIUI is dedicated towards promoting a healthy academic atmosphere at the Campus and is engaged to promote merit based competition among the students. Mr. Gulzar Ahmad Khawaja, Director General (Admin, Finance and Planning), IIUI also congratulated the achievers of award and encouraged them for their dedication. Ms. Shagufta Haroon, Director (Academics), Dr. Noreen Sahar, Chairperson, FMS Women Campus, IIUI also spoke on the occasion.

A total of ninety three students were given Merit Awards in the ceremony. The students who stood first in every batch were awarded “Rector’s Honour”, second position holders were given “President’s Honour” while “Director Academic’s Honour” was awarded to third position holders. The ceremony was organized by the Faculty of Management Sciences to acknowledge the hard-work of merit holders.

The Faculty has published fifty nine research papers in international journals and three books have also been published by faculty members whereas one book was written by a student was also published. Recently students of FMS have been selected for the first round of a business plan competition named as “INVENT IBA” held at Institute of Business Administration Karachi.

Photographic exhibition of Pakistan Movement starts at IIUI
Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik, Rector IIUI urges the nation to remember Pakistan Movement from Tipu Sultan to know about our enemies who have not forgotten us and we should not forget them because their nefarious designs are to break independent Pakistan.

He was addressing the mammoth gathering at the inaugural ceremony of a two-day Photographic Exhibition on Pakistan Movement here on Tuesday organized by International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) in collaboration with the Nazaria-i-Pakistan Trust, Lahore.

Inaugurating the exhibition, the Rector IIUI said it is need of the hour to study Pakistan Movement thoroughly from Tipu Sultan to the present Pakistan. He said Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah played a main role in Pakistan Movement and we should not separate Mr. Jinnah from this Movement. Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik said that the great poet Allama Muhammad Iqbal in recognition of the leadership of Mr. Muhammad Ali Jinnah had said that “I am the ordinary soldier of Mr. Jinnah”, then why we do not recognize him as our Quaid. The poetry of Allama Iqbal also reflects the Pakistan Movement and we should read his historic poetry for understanding the history of Pakistan, he said. The Rector said that Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah was a great leader of the subcontinent and his name is still alive.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad, President, IIUI, said that the name of Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, in India, is written in respectful words then why we are writing his name just as a personality not as a Quaid of the subcontinent. He said this attitude needs to be corrected and we should play our due role to aware the new generation about the purpose of the creation of Pakistan. He stressed upon the teachers to teach the students about the history of Pakistan thoroughly.

On the occasion, Mahmood Ahmad Farooqui, Additional Director (P&PR), said that the purpose of such exhibitions is to remind the efforts of our great leaders in the independence movement.

The ceremony was attended by Dr. Muhammad Riaz, Dean Faculty of Engineering and Technology, Dr. Zia ul Haq, Dean Faculty of Shariah and Law, Heads of Departments, Faculty Members, University employees and a large number of students. The Rector and President IIUI alongwith Deans and Heads of Departments also visited the exhibition and lauded the role of Nazaria-i-Pakistan Trust, Lahore, for keeping alive the Pakistan Movement through these pictures.

US delegation called on Rector and President IIUI
A 12-member US delegation called on Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik, Rector, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) and Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad, President, IIUI here on Monday. Mr. Gulzar Ahmad Khawaja, Director General (Admin, Finance & Planning), IIUI, apprised the delegation about the functions, goals and achievements of the University. The delegates discussed different matters of mutual interest with the Rector and President IIUI. The delegates were presented university souvenirs.

Earlier, the delegates also visited Central Library and took a round of different faculty blocks and the New Campus, IIUI. During their visit to the faculties of IIUI, the delegates showed keen interest to have interaction with the university students. A questions and answers session was also held between IIUI students and members of the delegation.

IIUI holds Lecture on “Human Development in Pakistan”
A lecture on “Human Development in Pakistan” was held under Iqbal International Institute for Research and Dialogue (IRD) at the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI). The lecture was given by Dr. Sairah Alvi, who is a founding member of the HDF (Human Development Foundation). The lecture was also attended by guest speakers Ms. Sara Hussain and Mr. Saeed ur Rahman.

Being a Cancer treatment specialist herself Dr. Sairah Alvi is doing developmental work in the field of cancer for its prevention and treatment programmes. Addressing the audience she said that HDF is currently working in 18 districts in Pakistan for creating awareness and giving help to people suffering from this disease. She said that the foundation was organized in America by the expatriate Pakistanis and they are doing everything possible in their capacity to implement the programme. The foundation also runs schools and a health care unit for the needy people. The foundation had been quite active during the Earthquake and floods in Pakistan.

Addressing audience Sarah Hussain, who is a Research fellow at Iqbal International Institute for Research and Dialogue (IRD), said that we need to develop models of development for ourselves rather than importing them from outsides. Mr. Saeed ur Rahman, who is a teacher at the English Department of this university said that whenever there has been the initiative for development there has been resistance. So no matter what the obstacles are, one must utilize all his powers and abilities to achieve the desired goals.

The lecture was attended by Director Female Campus Mrs. Qaiserah Alvi, Dean of Social Sciences Prof. Dr. Nazar Ul Islam, teachers from various departments and a large number of students. A discussion session was held after the lecture in which students participated and asked questions from the speakers.

Mr. Gulzar Ahmad Khwaja, Director General (Admin, Finance and Planning) thanked all of the guest speakers and the faculty at the end for gracing the event with their presence.

IIU International Cultural Exhibition concluded with zeal and zest
The 23rd International Cultural Exhibition of the male campus of International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) concluded with a prize distribution ceremony here on friday with full zeal and zest.

Rector IIUI Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik graced the event as chief guest while Student Advisor Dr. Safeer Awan, distinguished scholars, Deans, senior faculty members, students and a large number of media persons were also present on the occasion.

While addressing the ceremony Rector IIU Prof. Fateh M Malik urged students to study, understand and practice the message of Allama Dr.Iqbal. He appreciated the efforts of the faculty members of the IIU for imparting quality education in this university. He further said the aim of this cultural exhibition was to groom the overall talent of the students in co-curricular activities. He highlighted the fact that teachers multifarious role is a must for sustenance in global competition not only education but cultural and sports activities which help a lot in physical and mental flourishment of the students.

Rector IIU Prof. Fateh M Malik distributed shields, trophies and prizes amongst the winners of the exhibition and of Qirat, Hifz, Naat, Sports Competitions, Debates (English, Urdu and Arabic), Story writing, etc in individual and team events. In overall assessment International Institute of Islamic Economics (IIIE) got winners trophy whereas Faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences bagged second position.
Students Advisor and the organizer of the event Dr. Safeer Awan said extra skills are required for attainment of individual excellence. Students should be encouraged in this regard. Dr. Awan thanked all teachers, official staff and students for cooperation and organizing these successful events.

Fateh Muhammad Malik lauds IIUI Officers’ Role
Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik, Rector International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) has lauded the role of the officers of the university for enhancing the administrative as well as general role of the institution. He expressed these views while addressing members of the executive body of the Officers Welfare Association (OWA) of the university who called on him today.

Prof. Malik termed the administrative officers as a bone of any viable organization. He added that likewise IIUI officers have been and are playing very positive and constructive role for the university. He promised to solve the problems faced by the administrative officers of the university gradually. Earlier the delegation of the OWA presented a number of problems to the Rector. They also clarified that the IIUI officers have nothing to do with present anonymous campaign against the university administration. They said that they are also an integral part of the administration and so there was no question of any campaign again their own interests.

The delegation included acting president Muhammad Jameel, general secretary Manzoor Hussain Shah, press secretary Shahid Mehmood, sports secretary Sajjad Siddiqui, finance secretary Ishtiaq Ahmad and executive body members Muhammad Rafique, Syed Muzammil Hussain, Nasir Farid and Mrs. Zubaida Khtoon.

Faculty of Management Sciences (FMS), IIUI launched a Research Journal
The faculty of Management Sciences (FMS), International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) has launched a Research Journal first ever of its kind “The journal of Business and Management Sciences (JBMS)” in an impressive ceremony held here at the new campus of the university on Wednesday. The journal was approved by the international recognized editorial board of eminent scholars from USA, Canada, Australia and Pakistan. The Vice Chancellor of Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, Prof. Dr. Masoom Yasinzai was the chief guest on this occasion. JBMS is a bi-annual journal contains research work in the fields of Business, Management, Marketing, Finance, Economic and Technology Management.

Addressing to the launching ceremony the chief guest DR. Yasinzai highlighted the importance of research in the contemporary world and stressed upon the scholars and researchers to undertake quality research. He complimented the faculty on bringing out a business journal and hoped that the journal will set new standards in disseminating quality research work and knowledge. He urged young researchers and scholars to bring a change in the society through quality research work which he said is a pre-requisite for development of the county. He also urged students to adopt inter disciplinary approach towards studies. The chief guest termed the first issue of the journal as a milestone in the history of the faculty and the university.

Earlier, the dean of the faculty Professor Danishmand and editor of the journal, chairman higher studies and research Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Shah welcomed the guests and gave an over view of the research initiative undertaken the faculty of management sciences. Prof. Danishmand highly appreciated the Dr. Zulfiqar on single handling, developing and publishing this journal. It is worth mentioning here that the faculty of management sciences is the largest faculty of IIU, boosting 2500 students, beside 55 regular faculty members including 9 Ph. Ds.

The teachers and students of FMS have published 60 research publications in renowned journals just in 3 years. Dean of Faculty of Management sciences presented a souvenir to the chief guest. The journal aims to provide the most complete and reliable source of information on current developments in the fields of International Financial Management, Portfolio Management, Corporate Finance, Behavioral Finance, Forecasting Financial Markets, Monetary and Fiscal Policy Monitoring, Financial Econometrics, International Entrepreneurship, Issues of HRM in Multinationals, Organization Development and Change Management, Knowledge, Quality, Project Management, Advertising, Relationship Management and Technology Development and Innovation.

IIUI awards PhD on the relationship of psycho-social learning environment
International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) has awarded a PhD Degree to Mr. Muhammad Athar Hussain after he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on the relationship of psycho-social learning environment with anxiety and attitude of secondary school students towards the learning of English.

The significance of the study was to investigate into psycho-social dynamics of secondary classrooms which involve multi-dimension interactions happening between teacher and the students and student to student. The research focused on three dimensions of human environments i.e. relationship dimensions, personal development dimensions and system maintenance and change dimensions. These dimensions were correlated with anxiety and attitude of the students towards the learning of English. The study revealed significant and critical points regarding teaching learning process of Pakistani classrooms. It showed significant differences between male & female students; urban and rural students and among the selected districts on the three variables i.e. learning environment, anxiety in English language and attitude towards the learning of English language.

The research was supervised by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Professor and Dean (Rtd), Faculty of Education, AIOU. The thesis was evaluated by Professor Dr. Fazal Rizvi from College of Education, University of Illinois, USA and Professor Dr. Ugur Demiray from Anadolu University, Turkey, who gave very successful comments on the study. The thesis was also evaluated by one internal member Professor Dr. R. A. Saghir, Department of Education, IIU, and two external members Professor Dr. Rehana Masrur, Dean, Faculty of Education, AIOU, and Professor Dr. Aysha Akbar, Muhammad Ali Jinnah University, Islamabad.

Athar Hussain has presented his research papers in various national and international conferences including Singapore, South Africa, Japan and Saudi Arabia. His research papers have also been published in HEC recognized national and international journals. The area of research interest include Learning environments, ICTs, Distance and Open learning, EFL and Mix method studies.

Cultural Week Ends at IIUI
The 23rd International Cultural Week at the International Islamic University Female Campus has ended after three days celebration. The event ended today with the prize distribution ceremony which took place today at the Auditorium in female campus of Islamic university. The event was preceded by a one day Cultural Exhibition and a one day International Cultural Dress Show at the Faisal Masjid Campus of the university.

The event started at Noon after arrival of the Chief Guest, Ambassador of High Commission of Malaysia Mr. Dato Ahmad Anwaar Bin Adnan and by Guest of Honor senator Neelofar Bakhtiar. The event was also attended by the President Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad, Rector Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik and Director Female Campus Prof. Mrs. Qaiserah Alvi. The ceremony was also attended by a large number of students.

Prizes were given for the cultural stalls, dress show, sports and other co-curricular activities. China had been declared as the first position holder in the cultural stalls, dress show and food items as well. Jordan stood second in food items and turkey stood third in it. Somalia got second position in dress show and Kenya got third position in it. . Saudi Arabia stood second in the cultural stalls and Malaysia third. At the national level Punjab stood first in the cultural stalls and Khyber pakhtunkhwa stood second while Gilgit Baltistan stood third. Special Prize was given to Afghanistan for their good performance. Miss. Aisha Rasheed was declared as the Best Athlete year 2011. Faculty of Usuluddin has been declared as the best faculty year 2011. Prizes for co curricular activities were also given to the students in various competitions which were held as a part of the cultural week.

Ambassador of Malaysia while giving his comments thanked the University for inviting him to that prestigious event; it was his very first visit to the university during his posting. Senator Neelofar Bakhtiar said that she was glad to be at the Islamic university and encouraged students to work better for their country. President of the university said that he is proud of the students who have shown zeal and participated whole heartedly in the event.

Rector Islamic university appreciated the efforts of the students while Prof. Qaiserah Alvi said the event gives confidence to the students. She thanked all the staff for their help and coordination during the event and wished students best of luck for their future.

23rd International Cultural Exhibition Inaugurated at IIUI
The 23rd International Cultural Exhibition of the male campus of International Islamic University Islamabad inaugurated by Saudi Ambassador H.E Abdul Aziz Ibrahim Al-Ghadeer as chief guest while high officials from various diplomatic missions in Islamabad including Iran, Somalia, Afghanistan, Kenya and Philippine here at New Campus of the university Sector H.10, Islamabad today. Rector IIU Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik and President IIUI Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed, Dr. Zafar Ishaq Ansari, Vice President, IIUI, scholars, Deans, senior faculty members, students and a large number of media persons were also present on the occasion. Various high ups from the embassies of saudia arab, Iran, Turkey, Philippine, African countries, Middle Eastern countries, and others help the students to set the cultural stalls to share and exchange their cultural values, social norms to create, strengthen inter-cultural harmony among the students of the university by bringing their cultural artifacts of a diverse background on one platform.

While addressing the inaugural session chief guest Saudi Ambassador stressed on unity and solidarity for all muslim countries. He said that we believe in one muslim ummah concept and our benefits are same. He added that all muslim countries Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and others are brothers and we need to deal the international challenges together on one platform. He appreciated the help and support of muslim contries in the devastated floods of recent time in Pakistan. He said he became happy to see Turkish relief camps, Kuwait medical camps, Egyptian medical camps and others to support Pakistan in need. He urged all muslim countries to unite for the common interests. While appreciating the efforts of the IIU in bringing muslim countries on one platform. he said that he suggested all muslim countries students to get education in International Islamic University Islamabad. After the inaugural session chief guest along with other dignitaries visited stalls and cordially appreciated the hard work done by the students of the university to get to know each others culture and heritage. He announced five hundred thousand rupees for the on going cultural exhibition of the university. He termed IIU as the symbol of the unity of muslim Ummah. Mr. Ghadir thanked the Rector IIU, President, Staff, Participants, Organizers and Students for organizing such a colorful event.

Rector IIUI Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik requested muslim countries to establish and expand faculty of Urdu language and literature in their universities. He said that Urdu language has a vast literature of Islam and the students of the muslim world should consult the work done by our renowned philosophers and thinkers like Shah Waliullah, Allama Dr. Iqbal, Moulana Mudoodi and others such as tafseers of Holy Quran, Hadith, Shariah, will certainly beneficial for the the youth of their countries. President IIUI Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed said that this exhibition serves as medium of cultural exchange of different countries.

In order to facilitate the goal a colorful range of events were organized in the exhibition. The stalls presented the culture of more than 16 countries mainly Saudia Arabia, china, Turkey, Afghanistan, and others. The national stalls represented Waziristan, Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtonkhawah and Punjab. Every stall represented a specific region depicting the cultural heritage of that area. They displayed cultural artifacts, dresses, paintings, musical instruments, cuisines depicting their own culture. One participant said I have had the chance to interact with other students from different countries. This is when we understand how International Islamic University has provided the opportunity to all communities to express their social life.

IIUI to hold 23rd international cultural exhibition with full colors of international cultures
The 23rd International cultural exhibition of International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) has inaugurated by H.E Madam Al-Johara wife of Saudi Ambassador, H.E Abdul Aziz Ibrahim Al-Ghadeer, here at IIUI faisal masjid Campus today while Wife of Ambassador of Iraq , Rector IIUI Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik and President IIUI Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed, Eminent scholars from Pakistan and abroad including Former MD PTV Aghar Nasir, Mr. Zia-ud-din Sardar, Dr. Rasheed Amjad, Dr. Saira Alwi, Deans, Senior faculty members, Students and a number of media persons were also present on the occasion.

Various high ups from the embassies of Iran, Turkey, African countries, Middle Eastern countries, China, Japan and others help the students to set the stalls, represent and promote their cultures in the event. After the inauguration chief guest was taken a tour of the stalls of various countries setup by the students of the university. The chief guest was accompanied by the Director Female Campus of IIUI Mrs. Qaiserah Alvi and the judges Saira Alvi, Dr. Sadia Yasin, Prof. Naseera Shakeel and others. She interacted with the participants at the stalls and appreciated their hard work and talent. She appreciated the efforts of the students and said that the stalls were set by the students with great enthusiasm.

Rector IIUI Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik appreciated the efforts of the students and organizers and termed the exhibition a fusion of international cultures. He added such events are developing inter-cultural harmony among the students and masses. President IIUI Dr. Mumtaz Ahmed said that these types of festivals are bridging a gap between different cultures of the world.

The stalls presented the culture of more than 20 International countries mainly china, Saudia Arabia, Jordan, Palestine, Malaysia, Turkey, UK, Japan and others. The national stalls represented Waziristan, Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtonkhawah and Punjab. Every stall represented a specific region depicting the cultural heritage of that area. They displayed dresses, artifacts, paintings, musics, food depicting their own cultural fashions with the help of the embassies. The prize distribution ceremony for the stalls and other events in the exhibition would be held on 20th April at the Female Campus of the university.

IIUI celebrates its 23rd Cultural Week at female campus
23rd Cultural Week’s celebrations at Female Campus of the International Islamic University Islamabad will start on Monday, the 18th of April, 2011 at the Faisal Masjid Campus of the University which will be continued till 20th April. A large number of students participate every year with zeal and fervour showing cultures of different regions of Pakistan and more then thirty countries. Student setup their stalls where they represent their culture through dresses, pottery, food and various cultural items of their region. Students create a full set of the specific region by showing their cultural heritage.

The event will be inaugurated by Chief Guest, Minister for Information Dr. Firdous Ashiq Awan and the Guest of Honour by the Saudi Ambassador H.E. Abdul Aziz Ibrahim Al-Ghadeer on 18th April at the Faisal Masjid Campus of the University. The International Dress Show has also been arranged on 19th April at the Quaid-e-Azam Auditorium, Faisal Masjid Campus. Kanwal Naseer, a renowned T.V professional and actress, will be the chief guest and Dr. Fariha Nahid Alam, Dr.Khalida Samar Mubarikmand, and Begum Shahida Azeem, will act as judges. The dress show will also be attended by the Chief Guest Bahrain Ambassador Mr. Muhammad Ibrahim Al-Qadir and the Guest of Honour Neelofar Bakhtiar. Prize distribution ceremony will be held on 20th April at Female Campus of IIU H-10, Islamabad.

Prizes would also be given to the prize holders of the cultural stalls, dress show and the competitions held during the cultural week. The competitions are Essay writing (English & Urdu), Story writing, Declamation, Qiraat, Arabic Calligraphy, Henna, Pencil sketching, Poster making, Naat (Urdu. Arabic), Arabic Poetry.

IIUI’s 23rd Cultural Week celebrations starts on 19th April
Four-day celebrations of 23rd Annual Cultural Week – a mega event of International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) – are going to start from Tuesday, the 19th of April, 2011, at the Male Campus of IIU at H-10 Sector, Islamabad. The aim of this mega cultural event is to promote intercultural harmony and to keep the cultural traditions alive.

H.E. Abdul Aziz Bin Ibrahim bin Salih Al Ghadeer, Ambassador of the Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia shall inaugurate the Cultural Week on 19th April, 2011, at 11:30 am in the Auditorium Faculty Block–II (Male), New Campus of IIUI. Students from more than forty countries including Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Egypt, Sudan, China, and Sri Lanka as well as the province of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir shall setup their stalls during the Cultural Exhibition to be held on 19th April, 2011 at Faculty Block-II, Male Campus of IIUI. They shall exhibit their cultures and traditional rituals by displaying different cultural and traditional items like food items, dresses, arts and literatures, embroideries, musical instruments, and other cultural items.

Urdu, English and Arabic Debate Competitions have been arranged to provide an opportunity to the students to improve their international personal communication and their personality development. Urdu and English Debate Competitions will be held on 20th April and Arabic Debate Competition on 21st April, 2011. Qirat, Hifz and Naat Competitions will be held on 20th April whereas English and Arabic Quiz Competitions on 21st of April, 2011. Closing ceremony of the cultural week (at male campus) will be held on Friday, the 22nd of April, 2011 at 3:00 pm in the Auditorium Faculty Block-II at New Campus. Prizes will be awarded to winners of different competitions of the Cultural Week.

Delegation of Judges and Law Officers calls on Rector IIUI
Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik, Rector, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) praised the role of judiciary in Pakistan and said that whole the nation feel proud on our judiciary because of its historic role especially during dictatorship regime in Pakistan.

He was addressing a delegation of the participants of 52nd Training Programme for Judges, Attorneys, Prosecutors and Law Officers, called on him at New Campus of International Islamic University Islamabad. Addressing the participants, the Rector IIUI appreciated the participants of the programme and reminded the historic role of Iftikhar Muhammad Choudhry, Chief Justice of Pakistan, during Musharraf regime. He said that Iftikhar Muhammad Choudhry, vehemently rejected the dictation of military ruler of that time and given priority to the national interest. He added that this act of Iftikhar Muhammad Choudhry improved the overall image of judiciary. The Rector IIUI urged the nation that time has come to change our money-making mindset to achieve lasting leadership position in the world. This mindset has badly affected our national and international character, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Sahibzada Sajid-ur-Rehman, Director General, Shariah Academy, said that the purpose of such training programmes to make an interaction between the judiciary and the law scholars. He added that such training programmes will benefit the judges and law officers to understand the Islamic perspectives of laws.

Earlier, the participants were briefed about the functions, goals and achievements of the University by Gulzar Ahmad Khawaja, Director General (Admin, Finance & Planning), IIUI.

IIUI holds a special extension lecture on Islamic Thought as on going process of divine text
International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) organized a special extension lecture on “Islamic Thought as an on going process of understanding of divine text” at the Central Library, H-10 Campus, IIUI. Dr. Irfan Ahmad Khan, Director of Association of Quranic Understanding, Chicago, USA delivered the lecture to mammoth gathering.

Addressing on the occasion, Dr. Irfan Ahmad Khan urged that Islam is an ongoing process and Muslims can get guidance from Quran for resolving their problems faced by them. Dr. Irfan said that Quran guides about every aspect of the life, therefore, we need to be directly connected with Quran. He said we can get better understanding of Quran with the help of Hadith and Sunna. Dr. Irfan said that understanding the Quran is only possible when we got mixed ourselves in this divine text. He said everyone is to be connected with what Allah said, and we should utilize all available resources and understanding should be done by global Muslims. Dr. Irfan said Muslims can re-gain their leadership positions only when they get connected with Quran. He also urged the Ulema to give more time for better understanding of Quran for further guidance to people. He said that time has come to develop a methodology for better understanding of Quran to resolve the challenges faced by Muslim Ummah.

Dr. Zafar Ishaq Ansari, Vice President in concluding remarks said that Quran is continuous process of learning and teaching. Dr. Ansari urged that we should concentrate and focus on Quran for better understanding and guidance in practical life. He said curiosities of Quran can not become an end. He explained the Allama Iqbal’s saying that there are thousands of galaxies of thoughts in the Quran. Dr. Ansari added that the better understanding of Quran is the only way for Muslim to meet the new challenges. Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad, President IIUI gave his presidential remarks and thanked the distinguished speaker for sharing his intellectual views with regard to understanding of Quran. Dr. Mahmood Hassan Makhlof welcomed the distinguished speaker and guests.

Jointly organized by the Faculty of Shairah and Law, Faculty of Usul ud Din, and Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Civilization, IIUI, the lecture was attended by a number of senior faculty members, officers, and students of IIUI. Dr. Nazar ul Islam, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr. Zia ul Haq, Dean Faculty of Shariah and Law, and Dr. Zafar Ullah Baig, Faculty of Usul ud Din, also graced the occasion. The lecture was followed by a questions and answers session.

Indonesian Delegation Visits IIUI
The Indonesian delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, comprising of two-members, Mr. Ibnu Prispermana, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, Islamabad, and Professor Dr. Hariyadi Wirawan, Head of Department of International Relations, University of Indonesia, Jakarta visited the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) on Friday. Dr. Nazar-ul-Islam, Dean faculty of Social Sciences, IIUI welcomed the distinguished guests and briefed them about the university.

Mr. Ibnu Prispermana gave a presentation on the Indonesian Mission in Pakistan. There-after Dr. Hariyadi Wirawan presented a brief history of the University and Department of International Relations of Indonesian University. Dr. Nazar ul Islam enlightened on the faculty and various programmes of the Department of Politics & IR. The delegation was appraised about various curricula of the Department of Politics & IR.

Professor Dr. Hariyadi Wirawan showed his keen interest to develop exchange programs between IIUI and the University of Indonesia particularly in the field of teaching and research in Social Sciences. A wide range of areas of common interest came up in the discussion specially the experiences of the regional organizations i.e. ASEAN and SAARC. The delegation was of the opinion that there should be an MOU between IIUI and Indonesia University. This may include student exchange programs and research activities. Finally the delegation proposed formation of an association to be known as the Pak-Indonesia Friendship Forum.

IIUI mourns the sad demise of Dr Nabi Bakhsh Khan Baloch
Professor Fateh Muhammad Malik, Rector, International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) expressed his immense grief over the sad demise of Dr Nabi Bakhsh Khan Baloch. He was the first Vice Chancellor of the Islamic University Islamabad. In a condolence message, the Rector IIUI said that Dr Nabi Bakhsh was one of the founders of IIUI and his services for the development of IIUI will be long remembered. The Rector added that we are proud that such a famous and honourable literary personality of the country, Dr Nabi Bakhsh Khan Baloch, has served for the development of International Islamic University Islamabad. The Rector said that we, the faculty members, officers, and employees of IIUI, pray for the eternal rest of the departed soul and offer condolences to the bereaved family.
DR. ZAWWAR ZAIDI REMEMBERED BY IIUI
The International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) in collaboration with Quaid-e-Azam Academy, Federal Ministry of Culture, Islamabad organized a Memorial Lecture on Dr. Zawar H. Zaidi at Faisal Mosque Campus of the university. Former Senator and Former Secretary General of Foreign Affairs Akram Zaki delivered Key Note address on the life and work of Dr. Zawar H Zaidi.

Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik, Rector IIUI, Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad President IIUI, Akram Shahidi, Editor-in-Chief of Quaid-e-Azam Papers, Islamabad, Prof. Qaiserah Alvi, Director Female Campus, IIUI and other scholars addressed on various aspects of Dr. Zawar H. Zaidi’s life. Akram Zaki said that Dr. Zaidi was born in Badayun (UP), India. After obtaining a Master’s degree in history from Aligarh University, he came to Lahore after partition, and joined the Forman Christian College as a lecturer, where he taught for about twelve years before going to the UK for his doctorate. His association with the School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), London provided him with the opportunity to share his thoughts with the contemporary academia time which, of course, helped to deepen his commitment to Jinnah Dr. Zaidi had idealized the Quaid. He even organized student delegations and went round many parts of India to popularize the Pakistan Movement.

He said that Dr. Zawar Hussain Zaidi, distinguished historian, enlightened scholar, a thorough gentleman and, above all, a stead fast devotee of the Quaid-i-Azam, whom he considered to be the savior of Muslims and a statesman imbued with a rare quality to foresee the course of history. Dr. Zaidi had been, throughout his life, an ambassador of Quaid’s ideals, and even his old age and fragile health did not impede him in his mission to project the Quaid’s role in the Pakistan Movement. He stood for what he believed in: that without his leadership the dream of Allama Iqbal would have not seen the light of the day. Extremely unwavering was his passion for and commitment to the Quaid, which with the passage of time, kept on depending, as is explicitly apparent from his persistence in collecting and preserving thousands of Quaid’s documents.

Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik said that people of Dr.Zaidi’s Caliber are rare assets of any nation. Dr. Zaidi through his academic contribution shall be guiding the generations to come. Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad said that Dr.Zaidi was a great teacher who preserved our past heritage for our future.

Prof. Naeem Qureshi, Akram Shahidi and Prof. Qaiserah Alvi also spoke on the occasion. Volume No. 18 of the Quaid-eAzam Papers was presented to Mrs.Parveen Zaidi by Akram Shahidi.

Grand Mufti of Poland Visits IIUI and Faisal Masjid
Tomasz Miskiewicz, mufti of Poland visited the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI). Dr. Andrezej Ananicz, Ambassador of Poland accompanied him. Tomasz Miskiewicz delivered a lecture on “History of Islam and Muslims in Eastern and Central Europe” at the Central Library of the university under the auspices of the Faculty of Islamic Studies. Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik, Rector IIUI, Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad, resident IIUI and Dr. Zafarullah Baigh, Dean Faculty of Usooluddin, IIUI welcomed the distinguished guests. Faculty members, administrative officers and a large number of students were also present on the occasion.

Tomasz Miskiewicz said that Polish society is a symbol of harmony and peace. Islam and Muslims are integral part of social and political life there. there are many Muslims organizations in Poland which are playing important role in the society of that country.

He further added that Islam in Poland is an old entity and it has roots in Polish history. Presence of Muslims was always there in the Polish history. They are neither aliens nor immigrants in Poland. The Polish Mufti also referred to the subjugation faced by Polish Muslims during and after the 2nd world war under the communism. He said that the Muslims were however successful in preserving their religious and cultural traditions in that era. Speaking about present situation of the Muslims in Poland, he said that they are very much active in all walks of life. They have many organizations working under the umbrella of a supreme council which is recognized by the Polish government which fully respects Islam as an integral part of that country.

The Polish ambassador in Pakistan Dr. Andrezej Ananicz in his speech said that the Muslims and other communities in Poland are a symbol of harmony and unity. All Polish love their country and have been protecting it in past because they treat Poland as their home. The Polish ambassador appreciated the role of IIUI and offered academic cooperation with the university on behalf of his country.

Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik said that the communism was a curse as the population of that country faced tremendous problems in that dark era. He however paid tributes to the Muslims of Poland for protecting their religious and cultural heritage. He stressed upon the need of meaningful dialogue among civilizations and followers of different religions on pattern of Polish Muslims and Polish society.

Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad said that Poland was a leader of freedom who paved way for independence of the central and eastern European countries. it was the Polish pope who stood up against communism. He further added that IIU shall strengthen academic relations with Polish institutions.

Later Tomasz Miskiewicz presented his paper in a seminar on the topic of “Muslims and Inter-faith Efforts in Eastern and Central Europe” at the old campus of the university. The seminar was jointly organized by the Dawah Academy, Shariah Academy, Islamic Research Institute (IRI) and Allama Iqbal Institute for Research and Dialogue (IRD) of the university. Dr. Zafar Ishaq Ansari, Director General, IRI and Dr. Sajid ur Rehman Director General, Dawah Academy welcomed the Polish Mufti. He also visited the Faisal Mosque and expressed his deep appreciation over its architectural grandeur.

No Musical night at IIUI
There will be no Musical Night at the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI). It was announced by Syed Muzammil Hussain, Deputy Director Public Relations of the university here on Monday evening. He said that the Islamic University is fully aware of its character and adheres to its values thus nobody is allowed to hold any musical night at the campus. He added that there was no such application and there was no question of any permission to hold a musical night.
IIUI’s Character is fully observed, functioning normally
The role and character of the International Islamic University, Islamabad (IIUI) are fully observed and protected and there is no move to change it. It was announced by a spokesman of the university here on Monday afternoon. The spokesman said that the university was established in 1980s to impart quality education in this part of the world for the communities who are deprived of it. The university started with three faculties i.e. Shariah and Law, Usuluddin (Islamic Studies) and Arabic. The main purpose of the establishment of the university as laid down in its ordinance 1985 was “to provide an international seat of Islamic learning so as to provide every opportunity for all round and harmonious development of individuals and society and reconstruction of human thought in all its form on the foundations of Islam”.

The spokesman further quoted the ordinance and said that the IIUI was established to encourage and promote education, training and research in Islamic learning, social, natural, applied and communication sciences and other branches of learning to ensure the Muslim Ummah’s ideological, moral, intellectual, social, economic and technological development in accordance with the values, ideals, principles and norms of Islam.

The spokesman said that keeping in line with the spirit of the ordinance of the university it has established many faculties in addition to basic three faculties. Now the number of faculties has reached to nine with over twenty thousand male and female students. The university has progressed gradually to meet present day challenges faced by the Muslim Ummah thus there was no question of abolishing its Islamic character.

The spokesman re-assured that the university shall continue to march towards its declared and already adopted goals. About the situation at the university, the spokesman said that the university is fully functioning and continuing its service for promoting quality education.

PHD AWARDED ON DEMOCRATIZATION IN THE ARAB WORLD
International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) has awarded a PhD Degree to Mr. Muhammad Azam after he successfully defended his thesis on democratization of the Arab countries and role played by the American state and civil society therein. The study is significant in the sense that it has come to the fore at a time when the things have boiled up in the Arab world and people are not only making demands but also struggling for freedom and democracy at an unprecedented level.

The research study is an in-depth analysis of the ongoing process of democratization in the Arab Middle East and a breakthrough in understanding the phenomenon. The study takes into account several dimensions of democracy and democratic promotion in the Middle East. Awareness campaigns, media, education and economic sectors have been discussed. In addition, the study also provides an insight into the impact made by the American efforts. Reforms introduced by the governments of the six GCC countries have also been analyzed in the thesis.

The research study was supervised by foreign professor Dr. M. Nazrul Islam, who is also Dean Faculty of Social Sciences at the IIUI. The thesis was evaluated by two professors from abroad and three from Pakistan. Mr. Azam is the first candidate who has been awarded a PhD degree by the Department of Politics and International Relations, IIUI. Muhammad Azam is presently associated with the National Assembly of Pakistan as a researcher.
