Department of Psychology, International Islamic University Islamabad hosted a Webinar on “Education and Sports for the most Marginalized Post-COVID-19”.
The webinar was supervised by Dean Social Sciences Professor Dr. Amna Mehmood. The webinar was addressed by Professor Tim Unwin (UNESCO Chair in ICT4D) and Ebba Qureshi (Founder & CEO FemGames). This webinar participants shed light on ways through which governments can use digital technologies effectively and appropriately to support learning and sports initiatives to the poorest and most marginalized in a post-COVID-19 world. The experts suggested that to date much use of digital technologies in education has been intended primarily to serve the interest of global corporations and local companies interested in deriving profit from the education market, and that this has therefore led to even greater inequalities in learning opportunities. They emphasized the need for equity rather than equality in exploiting the resources for education and provision of sports at schools. They both raised concerns regarding the mental health issues associated with social inequalities and marginalization and shown keen interest in collaborating with the Department of Psychology to address any issues related to mainstreaming the marginalized.
On the occasion, Dr. Nazia Iqbal, Chairperson Department of Psychology paid vote of thanks to both guest speakers and concluded this interactive and exciting session with the hope that such kind of activities will continue in future for sensitizing students, faculty, and community at large.
