INTRODUCTION:
The department of History aims to develop a three pronged research program in History. Its first priority is to maximize the research potential available at IIUI, which is strong in capacity for developing Muslim History. In addition, this area of research is neglected in historical studies in Pakistan and as such it allows a great scope for contribution. The second priority of the department is to develop research potential in the areas of Pakistan History such as the political, social, economic, cultural and local/regional history. The third area of research will be based on historiographical studies related either with historiography or philosophy of History. 

AIM & OBJECTIVES:

2.1 Teaching Objectives and Learning Outcomes:
Since the students at this level are expected to be highly motivated and fully aware of the need for understanding the finer points of research methods and the philosophy behind their discipline, the teaching objective behind all courses of study will be to enhance the research potential of the scholars. In depth study of advanced research in various fields will constitute the course content and high degree of emphasis will be placed on papers of publishable quality and on public seminars for researchers and academicians. Students will be expected to gain knowledge of all possible sources on the subject. They will be required to interpret and collate, analyze and comment on the sources in terms of their authenticity, reliability and comparative utility. 

3. Requirements:
The minimum CGPA should be 3.00/4.00 (semester system) or first Division at least 60% marks (annual system) in MS/M.Phil/Equivalent Degree with GRE/GAT (Subject) with minimum 50% score for admission into PhD.

4. General Eligibility and Merit Criteria for PhD

• The minimum CGPA should be 3.00/4.00 (semester system) or first Division at least 60% marks (annual system) in MS/M.Phil/Equivalent Degree with GRE/GAT (Subject) with minimum 50% score for admission into PhD.
• PhD program is comprised of Course work, writing of a dissertation on an approved topic, research seminar, evaluation of dissertation by two foreign experts, and public defense of the thesis.
• Merit for admission will be based on academic record (30%) written test (50%) and Interview (20%).

5. Scheme of Study:

• Three Year Program (Minimum Six Semesters)
• PhD program is designed in accordance with the HEC requirements
• PhD program is consisted of 54 Credit Hours out of which 18 Credit Hours are allocated for course work and 36 Credit Hours for Dissertation.
• Core Courses are compulsory. Three Elective courses may be offered from the remaining courses.
• The students are required to take three courses each in First and Second semester.

6. Detail of the Courses:
The PhD students are supposed to complete 9 Credit Hours of compulsory Course work and 9 credit hours for optional course work. In addition the PhD students will write a dissertation equal to 36 credit hours thus completing 54 credit hours.
